To create this shot, a 3D proxy of the sword’s blade was created in Blender. The 3D proxy was then animated over footage of myself swinging the sword.
The animated blade was exported to Houdini, where a fire simulation was run with the blade as its source.
The fire simulation composited with the footage in DaVinci Resolve, with additional layers of glow and heat ripples added for cohesion.
